LAKEWOOD, Calif. — Tres Catalasan is the first three-time winner of the California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) Challenge as he defeated two-time winner Jerome Jordan, climbing the ladder, and winning by a score of 210-160 to win May’s edition of the tournament.
Catalasan was given the choice of a free entry to an American Bowlers Tournament Association (ABTA) competition, a Family and Friends no-tap tournament, a Junior Amateur Tour (JAT) event, or a $25 gift certificate to any Professional Approach pro shop. He chose a free entry to ABTA.
The shot patterns were a mystery this month, which reflects the challenge the bowlers of CSULB face month-in and month-out as they compete in tournaments around the Western region of the United States.
Two shots played short, while two played long, with bowlers feeling that a 46-foot, United States Open shot pattern was placed on lanes 55 and 56.
When all was said and done, Jerome Jordan and James Osborne stood tall atop the rest, tying with a score of -37, shooting 763, a 190.75 average, forcing a one-ball roll off. On lane 58 Osborne got an eight-count, while Jordan left a 6-7-10 split, giving Osborne his choice of lane.
Catalasan provided entertainment en route to his semifinal win, coming in extremely light with his fill shot, but picking up eight pins, after needing just seven to win by one.
A wait of five minutes for a ball return interrupted the other semifinal match up, but Jordan was unfazed, taking it handily.
In the final, Catalasan showed that the momentum clearly favored him, shaking off an open in the fifth frame to smash a turkey, followed by two spares and a strike for 210. Meanwhile for Jordan, a strong effort was marred by three consecutive splits.
